There are many bouts each year but rarely does one possess all the characteristics of a true battle: tightly matched teams, seemingly invincible heroines, a major rally, and a tight finish. But such was the case on Saturday June fourth as The Stepford Sabotage took on The Suburban Brawl. All present – participants and spectators alike – were in this one until the final whistle sounded.
The bout started with Black Cherry and Charlotte Bupowski on the jammer line. Both women became the most depended on for their team – each logging over 10 jams over the course of the night. Black Cherry took lead in this first match up, but could only snag one point before Charlotte got too close to point territory for Cherry’s comfort. This one point was only the slightest setback for the visitors in black, as Suburbia skater AWOL promptly responded with a 19 point power jam.
If the crowd was getting uncomfortable at the skewed score, it only got worse as AWOL returned four jams later with 14 more points widening the point gap to 34 to 6. It was a tough start for the Sabotage.

On Sunday May first the Stepford Sabotage headed to Waterbury for their second closed bout of the season, this time hosting the Maine Port Authorities. The last time that these two teams met in Connecticut, the Maine Port Authorities took the win with a score of 120 to 80. Since that fateful day, Connecticut has brought more skaters into their roster, some of whom show great promise with their mindful strategy and strong skating. Meanwhile, the Maine Rollergirls have been celebrating great success with their team (5 and 2) and have recently advanced from 11th to 9th in the eastern region. Quite an accomplishment, given some of the intense competition here on the East Coast.
While this bout may not have provided that edge of the seat, nail-biting competition that is so desirable in any sport, the action and strategies employed by both team provided great entertainment. Adding to the excitement were the uncommonly short jam lengths (21 in the first half, 20 in the second half) which gave an impression of a higher concentration of action.
Both teams started the bout by sending strong jammers to the line. Black Cherry for Stepford, Grim D. Mise for Maine. At the piercing sound of the whistle, both girls took off – Cherry taking the lead. She squeezed through the pack once, ending the jam promptly as Grim quickly advanced towards a potential scoring pass.

It is now time for the long delayed Roller Derby recap of April 16th’s Roller Derby bout that went down at the Connecticut Sports Center in Woodbridge, CT. The Yankee Brutals hosted the Skyland Roller girls from Warren County, NJ to a busy crowd of eager Derby fans. The Connecticut ladies mostly kept control of this bout, though the New Jersey visitors stayed close within striking distance – resulting in a tighter battle than the final score suggests.
The bout began with a stunning A Capella version of the Star Spangled Banner a la Skyland skater Daisy Duke-Ya. As the crowd applauded the stunning voice of the visiting skater, CT’s Pam Terror and Skyland’s Foxy Punisher approached the jammer line.

Saturday night’s Derby double header put the Stepford Sabotage up against the Green Mountain Derby Dames (if you’d like to read more about the opening bout between The Yankee Brutals and Assault City, click here.).
Like the Yankee Brutals, the Stepford Sabotage went through a bit of a roster change in the offseason, including most notably, the promotion of some of last year’s Yankee Brutals. Congrats to all the new recruits to Sabotage!

It was an emotional rollercoaster ride on Saturday night as the Connecticut Roller Girls returned to the track for their season opener. The crowd saw some mighty mighty hits, and some mighty mighty falls.
This year’s offseason was especially tough for us Derby fans. It seemed to last forever. The Roller Girls, however, have not been sitting idly. They have been working hard in the offseason recruiting new players and practicing. Saturday’s bout showed great promise for both Connecticut teams: The Stepford Sabotage and the Yankee Brutals.
The venue was The Connecticut Sports Center in Woodbridge. This particular event was a double header showcasing the Stepford Sabotage against the Green Mountain Derby Dames (Vermont), with an opener featuring CT’s B-team the CT Yankee Brutals against the women of Assault City (Syracuse) Roller Derby.
